GUIDE BOOK REVIEW by R.L. Stolz
Adirondack Rock: New Rock Climbing Guidebook

The new rock climbing guide is now available! Adirondack Rock by Jim Lawyer and Jeremy Haas was released in April, 2008. We have used hundreds of guidebooks to areas on six continents, in several languages, over the years. Some have led us to fantastic places while others have led us astray. This new guide is one of the most comprehensive, best researched guidebooks we have ever seen! While we have not even come close to climbing every route in this book, we are intimately familiar with rock climbing throughout the Adirondacks and the information in this book is frighteningly reliable. It sets very high standards.
It is a weighty tome of 652 pages filled with great information including many new routes throughout the Adirondack Park. Climbing topos, as well as photographs indicate the routes and are succinctly described pitch by pitch in well-written prose. Maps of cliff areas, directions with GPS coordinates, descent options and a handy summary chart for each cliff means finding the cliff and the route is more likely and with less hassle. Extensively researched climbing history, fun stories from locals, and original artwork by Jim’s wife Lucie Wellner add to the reading pleasure. Enjoy!
We have copies available for sale for $36.99. Contact us to purchase this newest addition to your climbing guidebook library and start to dream about climbing adventures in the Adirondacks! As a result of this huge compendium of information, we expect to visit many new Adirondack destinations ourselves.

Seasons
To learn what weather and conditions to expect each season visit our Seasons & Weather page. On this page, you can learn when conditions and weather are likely to be best for each of our activities. This information can be viewed by activity or by month.

Weather
Current Weather & Forecast is the best weather information we’ve found on the web, but remember weather forecasts in the mountains are notoriously unreliable. Always be prepared for cold, wet weather — no matter what the weatherman says!!

Ice & Snow Conditions Report– Posted In Winter Only

WARNING!

Mountain weather and conditions change quickly and frequently. This conditions report is based upon available information at the time of updating. Things change. Expect it, and plan for it. Every individual is responsible for making his/her own decisions about weather, routes and conditions. Alpinists have widely varying risk tolerance - one person’s casual stroll can be another’s desperate nightmare. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into BEFORE you become committed. No conditions report can provide all you need to know.

This report is offered for general information only. We do not attempt to provide information about individual climbing routes or skiing locations because perceptions of conditions vary so widely and because conditions can change so quickly. What was here today can, literally, be gone tomorrow. For detailed information about conditions on a specific climb we suggest you go take a look at it, and have a backup plan in mind in case things are not what you hoped. That’s exactly what we do.

For a better understanding of ice conditions visit From Water To Ice: How Climbs Form.

To learn about climate change in the Adirondacks, and how the warming trend is impacting winter recreation, visit Adirondack Winter 2.0 - A New Perspective.

Current Ice & Snow Conditions — 2/24/2010

Ice conditions continue to be generally excellent.

North-facing climbs can be quite brittle, while south-facing climbs are softening and getting 'baked-out".

Snow is piling up! We have over a foot and it is still snowing.

Need the Adirondack ice climbing guidebook, Blue Lines by Don Mellor? We have it for sale, along with other guidebooks and instructional texts.
